We discovered Aberdeen Seafood Restaurant on our second visit to Hong Kong when we stayed at City Econo Inn at Jordan. On our first night, we wandered around looking for food and ended up near Temple Street Night Market. We were hesitant at first to eat at an outdoor restaurant, having read some warning against da pai dong in Hong Kong. But the air smelled like heaven, the street well-lit, people crowding the small tables are chatting away happily and live seafood are jumping from their iced container on to the sidewalk, it’s just too hard to ignore (besides, we were really really hungry). In one word, the place is “festive”.

We were worried it would be hard to converse with the Cantonese-speaking servers, but the place is just littered with tourists being near the night market and all, so all doubts just disappeared and we were seated in a tiny table, given tea and menu (in English!) and after a few minutes of fidgeting with it, ordered a claypot rice each and an oyster cake. The irony is, we didn’t order any seafood that night.
Fast-forward to the following year, and the year after, Aberdeen Seafood Restaurant had been one of our staple restaurants whenever we are in the area. I even ate there alone just last December.
During our July trip this year, we purposely visited the place again, this time we are four in the group. We immediately ordered 1 Coke each then 2 more after a few minutes. Having to walk in Hong Kong’s humid weather at this time is simply draining. I rarely drink soda these days, but during this trip, Coke became my best friend. Coke never tasted so good.
Being 4 in the group, we ordered 4-5 dishes.

People walking by the street were eyeing us and our hot pot rice, as if saying, “Hot pot rice in this weather? Crazy tourists!” Hahaha! Hot pot rice are usually served during winter months in Hong Kong, when weather is really cold.

Steamed Scallops with Garlic and Vermicelli – 60HKD
Total Cost: Around 350HKD
In our opinion, this place is really worth a visit even if it is one of the more touristy places (like Avenue of Stars) in Hong Kong. If your time won’t permit a visit to the farther Lamma and Cheung Chau islands, Aberdeen Seafood Restaurant and its rival Temple Street Spicy Crab Restaurant is a sure alternative.

thank you for sharing with us, I believe this website really stands out : D.
hi, just want to know your feedback on City Econo. It’s one of the hostels I’m looking at. TIA
Hi Kat,
I like City Econo because it is located literally a few steps away from the MTR. The surrounding area is a bit quieter at night compared to TST and Mongkok but you can walk a little to Temple St. for the night market and outdoor seafood restaurants.
The rooms are as expected, small, but it is clean including the tiny bathroom. The beds are comfy. There is wi-fi signal in some of the rooms (rooms closer to the 6th floor reception area). And the owners are really really nice.
The only con I see is that the building is not very new but this is the same with all other hostels in the city. This means they have tiny elevators (front and back, front elevator is slightly bigger). But don’t worry they are well-maintained.
